About CamStent Ltd.

CamStent Ltd (CamStent) is an emerging medical materialscompany based in Cambridge, UK, that has developed a unique and cost-effective coating technology. The Company’s proprietary surface coating product prevents the formation of biofilms. Biofilms are thin layers of microorganisms, usually protozoa and bacteria, which aggregate on the surface of implanted medical devices.  They directly irritate the surrounding tissue and release toxins that cause inflammation and infection.  CamStent’s unique chemical coating resists attachment of the organisms that make up the biofilm, preventing patients from developing infections and protecting against tissue damage caused by these organisms.  The coating is inert, neither a drug nor biologic, and has a simple and expedited path to market release.

Each year, 10% of in-patients acquire an infection as a direct result of their hospital stay, leading to significant additional treatment costs and delayed discharges. The first application of the CamStent’s surface coating product to be commercialized will be a coating to prevent catheter-acquired urinary-tract infections. These account for 40% of all hospital acquired infections. This principal product is also a platform for further applications for medical consumables, including stents and other catheters.
